The Chair of Engineering Design congratulates Mr. Julian Shanbhag on the successful completion of his doctoral degree (Dr.-Ing.), which he earned with distinction. Mr. Shanbhag presented the findings of his dissertation, titled “Investigating Postural Control in Parkinson’s Disease Using Neuromusculoskeletal Simulations.” In his dissertation, he explored balance control processes in the human body – and which mechanisms are impaired due to Parkinson’s disease. Using neuromusculoskeletal simulations, biomechanical modeling, and experimental motion analysis, he was able to gain a better understanding of the complex interactions between sensory systems, the nervous system, muscle control, and movement. The thesis demonstrated how modern simulation methods can contribute to research on neurological disorders and, in the long term, support new approaches to diagnosis and treatment. He also successfully passed the internal doctoral defense by his colleagues that evening. We wish him all the best for the future and much success in the challenges ahead.
