Rethinking Digital Inclusion in Older Age

As part of the final presentation of the lecture “Concept Development of Innovative Products (KIP)” at KTmfk – Chair of Engineering Design at FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg, a particularly practical and socially relevant concept was presented.

At the core is “KlaRa”, an innovative two-part solution designed to support older adults in using digital technologies. The central idea is an easy-to-use device – comparable to a radio – that allows users to quickly access help for common digital challenges, such as using smartphones, purchasing tickets, operating self-checkout systems, or online banking.

This “digital radio” is complemented by an AI-supported app that guides users step by step in specific real-life situations, providing assistance exactly when it is needed.

The result is a well-thought-out overall concept that reduces technical barriers and contributes to greater social participation in older age. It demonstrates how engineering education and social innovation can be effectively combined.
