Multimodal inverse kinematics significantly improves IMU-based biomechanical analyses

IMU-based systems for capturing human motion offer high flexibility and usability compared to marker-based systems, which are considered the gold standard. However, typical IMU-related errors such as calibration issues and sensor drift can affect data accuracy. A recent publication in Scientific Reports presents a multimodal approach that combines IMU-based orientation data with positional data from selected reference points. The simultaneous use of both sensor types enables effective compensation of IMU-specific errors and increases the accuracy and reliability of the kinematic and dynamic results of biomechanical simulations.
