Printed sensors for strain measurement in rolling bearing rings

Rolling Bearing Marcel Bartz
Rolling bearing ring with imprinted sensor in the test setup.

Understanding the operating conditions of rolling bearings is the basis for safe operation and predictive maintenance to save resources and costs. However, in many cases it is difficult to implement the necessary sensors in rolling bearings, e.g. due to the requirement of space neutrality. In collaboration with the FAPS of the FAU and the OHM-CMP of the TH Nuremberg, a sensor was printed directly onto a bearing ring using the aerosol-based deposition system Nanojet. In a simplified model test, the basic functionality of such a sensor could be demonstrated and open challenges could be derived.
