In the simulation of short-fiber-reinforced thermoplastics, material parameters are usually used that originate from material testing on new specimens. In order to get closer to the condition on the road, where not only new vehicles are on the road, the influence of service loads on crash safety has to be investigated. The published work of the Chair of Design Engineering (Prof. Sandro Wartzack, KTmfk, FAU) reports on investigations of PBT GF30, a polybutylene terephthalate reinforced with 30% glass fibers, in which fatigue damage was induced in the material by cyclic loading. Its residual strength was then determined in a high-speed test and compared with the strength of virgin samples. The results of the tests were published in a special issue of the Journal of Composites Science.
